We are still very early in the year, but there’s little doubt that this one of the highlight sneaker releases of 2016. Jordan brings back the OG “White Cement” colorway of the Air Jordan IV, complete with Nike Air logo on the heel. A sneaker lover’s wet dream.
In 1989, Michael Jordan stood at the crossroads. Was he gonna go down in history as yet another high-scoring loser? Or was he gonna become a winner? The first playoff round versus the Cleveland Cavaliers was gonna prove in which direction his path was leading. Back then the first round of the playoffs was only a 5-game series, so you needed just 3 wins to advance to the conference semi-finals. In 5 out of 8 match-ups this year one team swept the other. The 6th-seed Chicago Bulls however managed to tie the series against the 3rd-seed Cavs at 2 games each. Game 5 was a back and forth, right down to the wire. 6 seconds on the clock. Craig Ehlo does the give’n’go off a throw-in and goes for the layup to bring the Cavs up by 1 with only 3 seconds remaining. MJ has one final chance for a game-winner. What follows is a scene that I’m sure you’ve seen before. Mike dribbles towards the free-throw line, goes for the jumper and banks it in. He immediately turns around and jumps up in celebration while his opponent Craig Ehlo collapses in the background – one of the most iconic photos in sports history. It’s hard to tell whether MJ had more hang time during this celebration or the jump shot. Anyway, this scene went down in history simply as “The Shot” and Mike had proven that he really had it in him.
The Air Jordan IV is incredibly popular – on as well as off the court. It is such an iconic shoe that even coach Phil Jackson wore it on the sideline back in the days. Looked very slick with the suit and all. For the ad campaign Jordan teamed up with Spike Lee aka Mars Blackmon once more. The partnership resulted in the classic “Can/Can’t” commercial and other funny spots. Spike Lee liked the AJ IV so much that he incorporated the sneakers in his cult film “Do the right thing”. In the movie Mookie’s AJ 4s get run over by a bicycle which results in a very funny yet tragic scene. I believe most sneakerheads feel Mookie’s pain when he looks down at his stained Js.
The AJ IV White Cement has been retroed before in 1999, but this time especially the grey tone is on point, much lighter than with previous retros and thus much closer to the original 1989 release. Scroll down some more for the detailed release info.
