In 1993, Michael Jordan announced his retirement at age 30. He was not only tired but also the murder of his father was a big shock for him. This is why he ended up not wearing the Air Jordan 9 on the NBA court. Nevertheless his 9th signature shoe plays an important role in the Jordan anthology. Firstly, MJ wore the AJ IX during his short interlude as a baseball player for the Birmingham Barons.
And secondly, the Jordan statue in front of Chicago’s United Center is also wearing the Air Jordan 9. Why is that if His Airness never wore them in combination with the Bulls uniform? Well, the AJ9 marked Jordan’s ascent to global superstardom and this can be seen in the design of the shoes. The Jumpman logo on the heel is located inside a globe and there’s script in a number of languages on the outsole, including Japanese, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian and Swahili. So for the MJ statue “The Spirit” the Air Jordan 9 was a great fit.
For the 2016 Spring/Summer collection Jordan Brand brings back the iconic sneaker as a low-top. In the early 2000s, the low version was popular with players like Mike Bibby and Derrick Anderson. The new release pays homage to the city of Chicago, being done in a classic Bred colorway. The black leather upper meets red accents on the logo details and lining and a clean white outsole. What makes them stand out and what gives them some extra lifestyle quality are the synthetic snakeskin overlays on the mudguard and heel.
