When you think about Michael Jordan’s career there’s no doubt that countless memorable moments come to mind. The Shot, MJ’s Slam Dunk Contest performance, His Airness dunking on Ewing and Mutombo to name only a few. But one moment stands out. June 11, 1997. In the middle of the night Mike wakes up sweating, shaking and with a feeling of nausea. He’s diagnosed with food poisoning or a stomach virus. That’s bad enough. The real problem is that it’s the morning of Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The Utah Jazz just won the last 2 games to tie the series. The momentum is on their side even without MJ’s sickness. Stockalone almost looked destined to win the trophy. Yet Michael was not gonna give up. The legendary “Flu Game” went down in history as one of the greatest moments in sports ever.
Despite being weakened by the illness Jordan played his heart out. At the end of the game he could barely stand on his own. But he was the top scorer with 38 points and helped his team to a decisive victory by adding 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Relive (and watch) this magical night in another blog post.
