While most of the world has accepted the Gregorian calendar as the international calendar, the Lunar calendar is used by a very large population in the East. This Saturday, the Year of the Rooster officially begins, representing fidelity and punctuality (since it wakes people up on time, pretty smart!). The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the most important holiday for the Chinese. Each year, billions of people around the globe celebrate the festivity with glittering feasts, gifts and family gatherings.
The CNY is not only a special holiday for Asian citizens, but for sneaker enthusiasts as well. Fifteen years ago, Nike kicked off one of the most anticipated highlights that is marked in every sneakerhead‘s calendar nowadays. The special edition shoes celebrate the Chinese New Year and their zodiac animals year in and year out. When the iconic Nike Air Force 1 model was released in a „Year of the Horse“ rendition back in 2002, the sneaker came as a real bombshell. Since then, dozens of CNY inspired shoes have hit the market and always been much sought-after sneakers.
Air Jordan gets festive this year with giving one of their most popular silhouettes some premium vibes. Paying homage to the Chinese New Year, the sneaker comes with bamboo-inspired graphics and corresponding tones. This year‘s collection presents us two different make-ups of the Air Jordan XII and both are stunning.
Taking inspiration from the revered ‚Taxi‘ colorway, the AJ XII ‘CNY‘ for men replaces the metallic lace eyelets and midsole accents with real bamboo. The white upper, featuring premium 3M reflective details, contrasts the cross-hatched texturized black mudguard, heel and lining. Especially the tongue catches the sneakerlover’s eye – and heart. The special tagging on the tongue, reading the Chinese characters ‘貳拾’, indicates the number ‘12’.
The girl’s pair features the same China-specific details as the men’s silhouette, but opting for a sandy leather upper with bright red accents. Jordan’s iconic number ‘23’ on the heel in red truly stands out in contrast to the Orewood Brown of the upper. The Air Jordan XII must not lack the outstanding tongue with the Chinese characters as well, giving the sneaker a touch of oriental vibes.
鸡年吉祥 – Good luck for this Rooster Year, y’all!
