SUPER BOWL LII
Philadelphia Eagles vs. New England Patriots.
Underdog vs. 5-times Super Bowl Champ.
Backup Quarterback vs. GOAT.
This Super Bowl was destined to be a true thriller. After kicking out the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Conference Championship game, the Philadelphia Eagles ruined the Vikings’ dream of a Super Bowl participation in their own U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. They marched in the game of the game as the underdog of the match. None other than the last year’s champs, the New England Patriots with their legendary quarterback Tom Brady, awaited the team from Philly in the most anticipated championship game of all US sports. On Feb 4th, the Super Bowl LII took off with a lightning start from the Eagles. Replacing the star QB Carson Wentz, the Eagles’ Backup quarterback Nick Foles showed no mercy and proved himself even with Tom Brady (championship ring number 6 was at stake on this special sunday for TB12). A high-scoring Super Bowl with three touchdowns on both sides and a very own touchdown by the MVP of the game himself, QB Nick Foles, entertained until the very last thrilling minute – breaking records after records: Most combined total yards in any game in NFL history (1,151), most combined passing yards in a postseason game in NFL history (874), most passing yards in a postseason game in NFL history with 505 by Tom Brady, most points by a Super Bowl loser (33 by the Patriots) and only ONE punt & ONE sack. What a game! The 41-33 victory over the Pats brought the Philadelphia Eagles their very first championship. Congrats to the team and their hometown Philly!
Justin Timberlake’s halftime show was not only a highlight for music fans but for sneakerheads as well. His appearance broke the web – not solely due to his energetic live performance with dozens of dancers, a Prince tribute hologram and breathtaking stage sets, but rather because of the Jordans he wore. Our hearts beat faster when we saw him debuting the Justin Timberlake x Air Jordan 3 ‘JTH’, a never-seen-before AJ3 that was sold out via Nike SNKRS in seconds right at the end of Timberlake’s performance. This “Tinker version” with a white Swoosh, Nike Air branding on the heel and a ‘SBLII’ embroidery is a true beauty – US Only, unfortunately. That was one hell of a show for this quickstrike release, hats off Jordan Brand!
This year’s Big Game was definitely a show of superlatives. Especially the famous Super Bowl commercials spoke volumes. The Super Bowl with over 100 million viewers was a true feast for the advertising industry. A 30 seconds TV spot during the biggest sport event cost 5 million US dollars last year. You read that right: FIVE MILLION. Imagine that.
This year, we had prominent faces from the worlds of film, music and sports, hilarious as well as emotional ads. It’s no surprise that this top marketing opportunity stirs a lot of hard competition.
