The AJ1, now hitting the stores on Saturday, is one of the original colorways of the shoe that started it all. It helped define Michael Jordan on the court, thus the anticipated re-introduction takes us all the way back to His Airness’ first season in the best basketball league. Remastered to the look he wore in 1985, the “Black Toe” returns with the OG-famous “Nike Air” branding on the tongue and the embossed “Wings” details on the ankle collar. Its iconic white/gym red/black colors for the 2016 release, served as one of the core colorways in 1985 as well. The AJ1 forebear comes with a dose of Gym Red on the leather heel panel and contrasting black highlights. The silhouette is closely tied to the famous “Chicago” edition, but the black leather, especially on the toe, predominates. Hence “Black Toe” – pretty clever, isn’t it?
In addition to this masterpiece, the Jordan Brand releases the Air Jordan XXXI “Chicago”. The newly-introduced basketball sneaker joins the AJ1 in its brilliant colorway. The traditional Chicago Bulls palette with red, black and white shades covers its woven and synthetic leather upper, uniting the Jumpman and the Windy City forever. The AJ XXXI tongue as well as the sole are adorn with the skyline of Chicago and the typical four stars, paying tribute to His Airness’ former hometown. The overall design is finished with the faded black swoosh and an enlarged Jumpman on the heel, making the 31er the first pair of Jordans featuring both logos.
The brand continues their trend of pairing up AJ31 releases with popular AJ1s. Pretty smart, since both kicks are an absolute highlight for sneaker collectors and ballers alike. The XXXI pays homage not only to the silhouette of the AJ1 but also to MJ’s heyday with the Chicago Bulls – cop or cop, there is no question!
